Description How To More Details
The AlaMode blends the best of the Raspberry Pi with the best of Arduino. Essentially, the Alamode is an Arduino compatible microcontroller that plugs into your Pi's GPIO port. The Alamode can be programmed using the Arduino IDE directly from the Pi allowing you to use shields, sensors, and other Arduino compatible accessories - you can even use the Pi as an Ethernet shield. But that's not all! Because the AlaMode allows for bidirectional communication, the Pi can monitor and control the Alamode putting real time integration and control at your fingertips.

The AlaMode is great for Cloud-based projects using Arduino accessories and shields hardware (motors, displays, sensors, etc.) that can be difficult to hook up directly to the Pi. The AlaMode can be powered directly from the Pi for low-energy projects, but you can also use any USB cable (like your smartphone's) to give the AlaMode an extra boost of juice.

If you're looking to combine the best of Arduino and Raspberry Pi, the AlaMode will be as sweet and satisfying as its namesake.

Design=4 or 5, Poor instructions April 10, 2014
Reviewer: Michael Davis from Wylie, TX United States
The hardware seems to be great as most reviews indicate. I've seen nothing to dispute that. However, the instructions are not designed for beginners. At all. Maybe not even people with medium experience. For instance, the instructions assume that you know how to download the setup file to your Pi. There are no instructions if you are installing a "headless pi." And yet, it would see to me that many people would be doing exactly that. I'll figure it out, I'm sure. It's just frustrating. You hope that time was spent considering various user levels and applications. It may work perfectly if you have the RPi hooked up to a keyboard/mouse and a display.

Works well; pins too close together August 3, 2013
Reviewer: Jim Schrempp from Saratoga, CA United States
I like the AlaMode shield overall. It was a snap to assemble. The instructions for running a test blink of the on-board LED was easy and proved it was working. I had two issues so far.

1. the GPIO pins are too close to the I/O H pins so you can't use a standard connector. I'm going to cut off the Arduino AD5 pin. Oh well.

2. The documentation mentions a test script AlaModeTest.ino but that link doesn't work.

Otherwise a good addition to the RPi.

UPDATE: Now that I've used it some more I'm upgrading my rating to 5 stars. This is really doing everything I want right now.

UPDATE: I have a video of the AlaMode in action:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW6e7OaxT8A
