Blinky Grid is a reprogrammable LED matrix. It has 56 LEDs and can display text and animations in a variety of ways. It is a standalone product and includes a pre-programmed microcontroller. The display is updated through a web page by holding the Blinky Grid up to your monitor. Two squares on the web page blink to transmit the new message or animation to the Blinky Grid microcontroller.

Blinky Grid requires 2 AA batteries for use, and assembly requires a soldering iron and solder, a diagonal cutters, and optionally, a hot glue gun and wire strippers.

  • Easy to assemble kit makes for a great learning experience. All parts are the largest surface-mount packages available (1206 and SOIC).
  • Fully open-source designs means that we share the knowledge and files used to create these kits, including the circuit schematic, firmware, and PCB layout. We’ve designed the Blinky Grid and Blinky POV to be easy to modify.
  • Custom, professionally-made PCB provides for an easy soldering experience.
  • To construct a Blinky Grid or Blinky POV, you’ll need the kit, a soldering iron and solder, and anything extra you want to use for surface mount.

Awesome little kit and awesome teaching tool! October 24, 2012

I bought this little (no pun intended!) kit mainly for the novel programming method and exceptional functional documentation on the Wayne and Layne (manufacturer) website.  My primary intent was to use it as a teaching tool - something that in itself worked out very well!  besides that use case it was a joy to assemble taking only about an hour.  I've had a little formal training in soldering years ago but even my kids took a crack at it and thought it was a fun challenge!  I'd recommend this kit for anyone looking to stretch they're soldering skills and/or anyone with an interest in exploring or explaining basic programs and programming theory.  Overall a fantastic kit and well worth it's price!
