The Electric Imp may look like an SD card, but it's far from it! Inside the SD card exterior lives a WiFi enabled microcontroller that's designed to easily connect your project to the cloud. Once connected, you can reprogram the the Imp module from anywhere you have a WiFi connection - allowing you to make updates as often as you like. The simple web interface gives you complete control of the Imp module, allowing you to write, complie, and upload code through a simple, encrypted web interface using the C-like language called Squirrel.
Connecting to your local network is a snap - just power up the Imp module through a breakout board and download the Electric Imp app for your iOS or Android device. Input your network settings into your device, and hold the Imp up to the screen. When the data is received the Imp auto-connects to your network!
At the heart of the Imp lies a Cortex-M3 processor, 802.11b/g/n WiFi (complete with WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption), and a sensitive antenna.
Although the Imp looks like an SD card, it is not SD card compatible. Inserting it into an SD card won't do anything. Instead, you'll need to custom design your own Imp friendly circuit or pick up an April breakout board (not included.)
