Description How To More Details

Introducing the MakerShield kit - The ultimate open source prototyping shield for Arduino & Netduino micro-controllers.

Having a prototyping shield is a must have accessory for anyone wanting to go beyond blinking an LED with their micro-controller. If you want to do more, you will need to build a circuit, and if you want to build circuit, you will want a prototyping shield like the MakerShield.

Unlike other prototyping shields on the market, the MakerShield allows you to create the circuits the way you want, and easily make as many changes as needed without having to solder. All the major components and pins of the MakerShield are user-assignable. This allows you to simply jump from the appropriate components header pin to any of the pins on the micro-controller. You can make as many changes as you want, and all without any soldering required. Just jump and go!

Being able to change the pin connected to the on-board LEDs, button, or potentiometers allows the beginning programmer to go through the examples included in the Arduino software with ease. More advanced users will appreciate the convenience of the on-board components, and the incredible flexibility designed into MakerShield.

We haven’t forgotten about the growing number of Netduino users either. They require 3.3v analog signals, and not 5v. The MakerShield’s potentiometer has a convenient jumper that allows you to select between these either 5v or 3.3v signals.

Advanced users might want to stack another shield, an Ethernet shield for example, on top of the MakerShield. This isn’t a problem since the MakerShield kit uses stackable header pins, and retains the original ICSP pin locations of the Arduino.

MakerShield's unique features:
  • User definable components
  • Includes a Potentiometer, button, and (2) LEDs (needed in most circuits)
  • 3.3v & 5v compliant
  • ICSP header in the same location as the Arduino Boards
  • Power filtering capacitors on 5v and 3.3v lines
Note: Assembly required (Soldering). Does not include a micro-controller. Also available in the Projects Pack for Arduino.

Where to look, what to get January 20, 2012
Reviewer: Barry Millman from Ottawa, ON Canada
If you buy this, strongly consider buying (at the same time)  the mini-breadboard to stick on it.  I didn't, and since I'm in Canada the postage is prohibitive.
Next.  The ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS are found by clicking on the "How To" tab on the ad for the Makershield Kit on this site.
Third, I found that nail clippers worked better than my diagonal cutters for cutting the leads short.
Fourth, I'm junction-cautious.  I put an alligator clip across the LED leads (above the board, so the LED's float a bit) to dissipate the heat from my soldering pencil (30 watt).

Floating Button? December 31, 2011
Reviewer: M Belanger from Long Beach, CA United States
So the on-board button has no pull-down (or up) resistor?  Was that on purpose?  Seems like it goes against the basic idea of the shield, adding the most-needed basic input and output items with a minimum of fuss.

Get. This. Kit. December 25, 2011
Reviewer: Mac Again from Cannon AFB, NM United States
Whether you are new to Arduino or have been using microcontollers for years, the MakerShield is an absolutely essential tool for tinkering and learning.  Don't forget to order a mini breadboard (product code MKKN1, available in five colors! - http://www.makershed.com/Mini_Breadboards_p/mkkn1.htm ) to go with it!

Great general purpose shield November 5, 2011
Reviewer: Robert Yerex from Sandy, OR United States
I have built a couple of these and they are great! I can adapt them to specifi uses, and because they can be stacked, I can put together specific configurations quickly.
