Description How To More Details

Arduino is an amazing tool for physical computing — it's an open source microcontroller board, plus a free software development environment. Use it to make cool interactive objects that can sense inputs from switches, sensors, and computers — and then control motors, lights, and other physical outputs in the real world.

The Uno is compatible with all current shields and code, and comes assembled — simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery.

upload vs download August 10, 2012

Arduino upload vs download seems backwards from typical nomenclature.  Usually when moving data from a higher level machine to a lower level machine, we download as when using a personal computer to transfer code to a microcontroller.    e.g. from the internet to your PC is download...from your PC to your Arduino is downloading even further...

Downloading is the transmission of a file from one computer system to another, usually smaller computer system (e.g. microcontroller).

I think the Upload/Download nomenclature is more based on the initiator of the transfer and which side of the transfer you are referring to.

If you are speaking from the perspective of a PC, you can download from the internet, and upload to a device like an arduino or cell phone. If the device is initiatiating the transfer, you can say that it is uploading data to a PC or downloading data from a PC.

To say it more simply, speak as if you are the device, and use "upload" as a synonym for "send" and "download" as a synonym for "receive". A PC sending data to an arduino is uploading to the arduino - but an arduino receiving data from the PC is downloading it.

The phrase "Download that to me" or "I'll upload that from you" don't make sense.
