Description How To More Details

Out of the box, these screens fit into a variety of 10.1-inch netbooks. These screens look like a standard LCD screen in ordinary room light, but take them outside in the sunlight and see the difference. The Pixel Qi screens are bright and easy to see even in direct sunlight. Like standard LCD displays, Pixel Qi displays show quality full-color images, full-motion video, and high screen brightness.

Each pixel in the Pixel Qi screen is mainly reflective, but still has about the same efficiency as a standard LCD when backlit, enabling the user to experience a crisp image with excellent contrast and *brightness* in any light. The Pixel Qi screens consume about 80% less power in the reflective mode making them a great choice for “green” applications. The screens are also ideally suited for e-reading applications, delivering better contrast ratio and similar reflectance typical of electrophoretic displays currently used by consumer e-reader tablets.

pixel qi installed on NB30 european version August 13, 2010
Reviewer: quentin coquerel from rouen, 76000 France
the exchange of the original display with the pixel qi one was easy, as described everywhere : the connector was placed at the same place, so no problem. The NB30 I have was provided with a TOUCHSCREEN, wich was glued with thermoglue to the original screen ; so in order to keep it, I removed all the glue that was between the screen and the glass touchscreen. I did it with a very sharp knife (a scalpel) very carefully, because the touchscreen is really fragile. Took me 3 whole hours to remove it all !
I cleaned the touchscreen, put some double sided tape around it (2 layers, to have the same space between the touchscreen and the pixel qi display !)
and mounted it back in the netbook, and voila !
3 stars only, because I bought this screen to use it most of the time with backlight off, but the contrast is too bad to use it indoor with poor light. B&W mode is only usefull when put under sunshine ! (maybe the extra layer due to the touchscreen doesn't help with the contrast ratios...)

Samsung NB30 + Fedora 13, very happy August 11, 2010
Reviewer: WoodR from Harvest, AL United States
Purchased a new samsung NB30 to install the pixel qi display.  Installation was pretty easy, only requiring a 000 phillips head screwdriver and some gentle prying to remove the front cover of the display.  You have to move the mounting brackets from the original display, but that only involves a few more screws.  Took about 15 minutes (stubby fingers + small screws are a bad combination).

Display is beautiful.  It would be nice to have better contrast when the backlight was off, but this is a first generation device and it performs exactly as advertised.

I'm running Fedora 13 which performs very well on the netbook (I also upgraded to 2GB RAM, but Fedora was doing fine with the factory 1GB).  Fedora does not have built-in support for most of the Fn key combinations, including the ones to adjust brightness and toggle the backlight.  The instructions on this page show how to enable these features using a few shell scripts:

Pixel Qi / Samsung NB30 July 31, 2010
Reviewer: Natalius Kiedro from Germany
5 stars in my case - no pixel error - and the proper 40 pin connector. While the display change does take longer than 5 min - it is definitely worth the effort. The result is a glimpse to the future of displays.
Thanks MakerShed and Pixel Qi!

Great screen, but..... July 30, 2010
Reviewer: Wes from AZ United States
This screen is amazing, clear, and bright. The direct sunlight viewing really has to be seen to be believed.

Installation was a snap in my Aspire One D250. From doorstep to installed took less than 20 minutes. As mentioned in this site's forums, the Acer doesn't like to keep the backlight off (Fn+F6 only turns it off until you use the trackpad or hit a key) but I knew that going in.

If I like the screen, then why only 3 stars?

Unfortunately when I went to turn on the screen today (I installed it yesterday, and it worked beautifully), there was a single "hot" pixel right smack in the middle of the screen, which is disappointing. Honestly I think a white dot is better than a black one(dead pixel), but still....

I understand that this is basically a production sample without warranty, and I'm pleased with every other aspect, but I can't help but be bummed.

If the hot pixel was somewhere off to the side, 4 stars, if there wasn't one at all, 5 stars no question.
