We put this set together especially for kids in middle school through high school (age 11 - 18) who have a strong interest in science and are likely to take honors or AP high school science courses and major in science in college. For kids like these—our future scientists, teachers, professors, engineers, and inventors—it's important to have not just their own microscopes, but microscopes powerful enough to reveal fine structural details in microorganisms and cells.
None of which means that this set is “too good” for younger students or those who have not yet developed an intense interest in science. If you want a microscope set that's suitable for everything from elementary school science through advanced high school science courses, this is the set to buy.
The core of this set is our Model 134-CLED microscope, which provides 1000X magnification in addition to the standard 40X, 100X, and 400X magnification settings. This full-size scope is better than most microscopes used in public schools. Its objectives and widefield eyepiece are fully achromatic and made from fine optical glasses. Its rugged metal frame and moving parts are engineered and student-proofed for years of reliable performance. It also provides many advanced features, including a professional-grade integrated mechanical stage with low-position x- and y-axis controls and a focusable 1.25 N.A. Abbe condenser with iris diaphragm. We offer better (and much more expensive) microscopes, but the Model 134-CLED is our least expensive scope that's suitable for even the most challenging middle school and high school coursework.
We didn't stint on the accessories, either. Other than some common household items, the MAKE Advanced Microscope Set set contains everything you need to hit the ground running. Just unpack the scope, set it up, and your kids can start observing the invisible world around them. Within minutes, they can begin making their first close-up examinations of leaf structures, insects, pond life, fibers, and other tiny items. They'll learn essential microscopy skills and procedures, from preparing whole mount slides, section slides, and smear slides to growing and observing their own microorganism cultures.
