Description How To

Standard HD44780 LCDs are useful for creating standalone projects. They are really easy to use with an Arduino, thanks to the LCD libraries that are available to download.

Features
  • 16 characters wide, 2 rows
  • White text on blue background
  • Connection port is 0.1" pitch, single row for easy breadboarding and wiring
  • Pins are documented on the back of the LCD to assist in wiring it up
  • Single LED backlight included can be dimmed easily with a resistor or PWM and uses much less power than LCD with EL (electroluminescent) backlights
  • Can be fully controlled with only 6 digital lines!
  • Built in character set supports most English/European/Japanese text, see the HD44780 datasheet for the full character set
  • Up to 8 extra characters can be created for custom glyphs or 'foreign' language support
  • Comes with strip of header pins
  • Can adjust contrast with the addition of a potentiometer (not included)

Hi there!
I received the display yesterday, and it took me about 1 hour to find out and to succeed to make it display whatever i wanted, and it really works great ! Neat, visible, really a nice piece.
Here's the link for the tutorial :

A lack of information June 10, 2011
Reviewer: Miel Bronneberg from Amsterdam, Netherlands
I, too, just received this without datasheet, but it does include a potentio meter. That's nice. It also has 32 pins, instead of 16. Probably nice as well, but what do they do? All info I can find by myself assumes 16 pins.

I decided to just give it a go. Soldered on the 32 pins, hooked it up as described here: http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/LiquidCrystalDisplay (ignoring one row of pins) and hey presto, it works! Just also connect pin 16 to GND and 15 to 5V to get the LED to work.

Next I hooked it up using the other row. Works too! See, 32 pins is just better than 16.

No instructions or pin-out May 21, 2011
Reviewer: rostaman from Buda, TX United States
I just received this unit without instructions or reference to an online document.  I sure would like to get this going.  It has 32 edge connectors, not 16 as in the pic.

Anybody have a clue?

Easy to use in Arduino projects December 21, 2009

This display is a snap to integrate with Arduino projects using the built-in Liquid Crystal library.  Aside from the included the strip of pin headers, you'll also need a potentiometer for brightness control.  Had the pot been included (even for an extra dollar), I'd have given five stars.
