An Alternate Casing June 9, 2010
Reviewer: Stefan Jones from Hillsboro, OR United States
I ordered two light brick kits, and enough resin for two "bricks."

The kits arrived first, and I put one together while waiting for the resin. I had built a few "hex pummers" before, so the build was a fairly familiar exercise. The instructions, printed in MAKE #18, could have been a little more concise, but I got everything together in about an hour.

As it turned out, the sculpting supply outfit wanted to charge an insane amount to ship the resin. I decided to find an alternate "shell" for the light brick.

My first try was a winner. A black-wood-framed lantern for tea candles. The sides were frosted glass, with a Chinese ideogram "in the clear" on each.

I placed the board with its "back" against one corner of the interior. Viewed through the "front" panels, the LED lights are diffused to big, fuzzy, bright blobs. The effect is really pleasing.

I plan on making my own cases for my "bricks" based on this found item.

My Second and Third Project January 26, 2010
Reviewer: Neil Tsubota from Foster City, CA United States
After I felt confident that my solder skill have not completly disappeared after 4 years of Engineering Classes and 30 years of working.  This light brick was my second and THIRD project.

This is an EASY project if you follow the directions.

I even had the pleasure of chatting with author (maker) of this project.

The Maker Magazine you will see this project is in # 18.

You can also get some very useful files at:
http://www.tenmilesquare.com/library

then scroll down until you see the completed light brick.

It was FUN and I plan to do this again.

Also follow the resin casting part from Tap Plastic.  I used a # 10 molding kit with the resin and catalyst.  This part should be carefully followed and I do NOT recommend children under 10 years old do this part without ADULT SUPERVISION. This stuff heats up (exothermic reaction) very fast. Remember it is a "Catalyst".
