Description How To

It's the first musical instrument you play without touching. The theremin, invented in 1919 by Russian scientist Leon Theremin, is one of the world's earliest fully electronic instruments. Its eerie, otherworldly tones (as heard in classic creepy movies) are created by the proximity of the player's hands to the metal antennas, with the resulting radio frequency interference being transformed into musical tones. This kit is easy to build and play. Includes instructions in Japanese, but we've got English instructions right here under the "How To" tab. MAKE is proud to be the exclusive distributor in North America for these brilliant kits, part of Gakken's Sophisticated Science Kit for Adults series.

Best $30 I ever spent November 8, 2012

Picked one of these up at the Maker Faire.  Very easy to put together (despite no english instructions)- getting the "tuning" screws set correctly was a bit of a pain.  I thought it was broken at first.  This video was helpful:

A cool little noisemaker November 16, 2009
Reviewer: roytheodd from North Hollywood, CA United States
A fun little device. It's exceptionally easy to assemble, requiring only a very small Phillips screwdriver (I used one from an eyeglass repair kit) and four AA batteries. All of the packaging and text is in Japanese, but again it's exceptionally easy to assemble. I built it without even seeking instructions. It's also a very quick build, taking less than five minutes to assemble. This is one of those kits where the end product is much more of what you're buying than the experience of putting it together. If you're looking for a kit that will challenge your build skills this isn't it, but if you're looking for a mini-Theremin this one is aces. Its volume doesn't get very high so you need a quietish room to hear it, but it has a good range of sounds and you can figure out how to produce the different sounds easily. I got mine last night, so no telling how long the batteries will last. I am happy with final product and I recommend it if you're looking for an inexpensive Theremin.
