Description How To

Features a 20-key keypad, a single 7-segment LED, and 7 individual LEDs, and comes with 7 bits of software built in: an organ (basic tone generator), sound hit game, whack-a-mole, tennis, timer, music player, and Morse code generator. It's a fun, retro kit, just begging to be hacked! Easy to build -- instructions are in Japanese but feature highly detailed assembly pictures (sorry, no English translation at this time). MAKE is proud to be the exclusive distributor in North America for these brilliant kits from Gakken.

Shields! July 7, 2011
Reviewer: Jon from Chicagoland area, IL United States
It would be nice if Make designed shields for this, or add-on kits like the tea robot above! I also like the fact that it can be programmed from itsself, which you don't see a lot of in micro controllers/computers.
Perhaps a retro Arduino?

It's not a kit, but it's still awesome! November 29, 2010
Reviewer: David Holowiski from Taber, AB Canada
Don't be deceived - other than connecting two wires and screwing in 6 screws, it's not really a kit.  However, it's awesome anyway! Within an hour I had written my first two programs - a simple 'hello world' app, and a hex to decimal converter. What a great way to learn assembly language. This 'kit' would be great for teaching young people how computers really work.  Well worth it!
