Description How To More Details

Hiraga Gennai (1729–79) was an Edo period Japanese pharmacologist, physician, author, painter, and inventor who is well known for his Erekiteru (electrostatic generator). This cool little box replicates his early work in creating static charges. Easy to build -- instructions are in Japanese but feature highly detailed assembly pictures (sorry, no English translation at this time).

Don't buy it December 30, 2011

Japanese instructions aside, you can follow the instruction diagrams pretty well, but this kit is poorly made and doesn't fit together well.  I knew by the end that it's likelihood of it working without a couple hours of putzing with it would be very low.  Don't waste your money.

If you can read Japanese, get this kit! July 28, 2011

My 11 YO son and I had a very disappointing experience with this kit, and are stuck with $40 and a pile of parts.

The instructions were entirely in Japanese (as is stated in the product description), but were not as easy to follow as it was claimed.

The biggest problem was that the supporting diagrams didn't show enough detail.

Fairly early into our build, my son screwed the wrong screw into the rotating drum. We discovered the error immediately, but the screw couldn't be backed out, which ended our endeavor then and there.

A better set of instructions (written in English, with better diagrams) would have been very helpful and might have prevented this mistake.
