Inch by inch: you can make a mind-blowing remote controlled "Meka-Inchworm" robot with this fun, no-soldering-required kit. You've got to love a machine that moves like a bug! Includes instructions in Japanese, but we've got English instructions right here under the "How To" tab.

Features
  • See the "How To" tab, above, for PDF English Instructions.
  • Requires no soldering -- easy to build in about 2 hours
  • Runs on 6 AA batteries (not included)
  • Cool biomechanical movement! The legs of the Inchworm consist of 3 parts: fore, hind, and center. When you watch it move, you can see there are 2 patterns: 1) fore and hind legs are touching the ground and the center legs are in the air while the machine is moving, and 2) only the center legs are touching when the fore and hind legs return to their positions, or while making a turn.
  • When assembling, enjoy seeing where the kinetic energy is transmitted through the links -- the machine will be that much more impressive.

Really fun, elegant kit. December 26, 2010

Takes only a few hours to put together, and works quite well! Very hackable too - I've made mine crawl upside down suspended from a string. http://www.instructables.com/id/Mechamo-Inchworm-hack-Crawl-along-a-string/

Use the Japanese instructions December 28, 2009

The English instructions don't differentiate between the lengths of the various rods. This will lead to a bit of confusion. I found the Japanese instructions to be very easy to follow. This is a very enjoyable kit.

Lots of fun October 31, 2009
Reviewer: Tyler Bennett from Cary, NC United States
This kit was a lot of fun for me as well as my 11 & 12 year old grandkids.  The kids put the kit together (with my looking over their shoulder) in around 2 hrs and then we all enjoyed running it around on the floor.

Only trick when putting the kit together (true of all Gakken kits) is you have to look VERY carefully at the plans, esp when choosing the right length parts.  This gave us some trouble in this kit as there were a number of rods of different lengths and we used the wrong one in one place and it took me a while to sort it all out (kids quickly got bored with this phase and wandered off).
