Mousebot Kits are a very quick, easy-to-solder, light-chasing robot perfect for beginners. When finished, these little bots are so fast, you have to run to keep up with them. We found that out the hard way when one got loose in the warehouse. Choice of black, white or red.

Please note: Requires soldering

  • Herbie is such an elegant, clever design using very few parts, it's been featured as a construction project in "Junkbot, Bugbots, and Bots on Wheels," "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Robots" and MAKE magazine.

Enhanced with functional whisker and tail sensors, it doesn't get stuck in corners while it scampers around.

    9-volt battery not included.

Fun, But Not Cheap May 21, 2013
Reviewer: Cade C. from Edwards, CO
To be honest, I have no idea how people could mess up this kit, besides the accidents that kind of just happen. I built it according to the instructions, but I later changed the foam tape out for some superglue. It made the motors stick to the board a LOT better. It's only too bad that it is super expensive, even without the shipping costs. But it was fun to build, and the kids at my school love it.

Luck required April 24, 2013
Reviewer: John M from Los Angeles, CA United States
As someone who has successfully completed fairly complex soldering projects, I failed at this one and wasn't able to troubleshoot the problems. I'm embarrassed that 15-year-olds were champs, but I don't think it's entirely my fault that it didn't work.

What seems a major design flaw is to use solder as both an electronic connector and a physical connector. The battery position is critical, and only luck would align it correctly without good instructions. I resoldered the edges several times to be able to fit the battery, but never got the mousebot to function correctly despite resoldering and checking physical connections and polarity

Customer support is also mysterious, and not easily accessible. I don't expect them to fix it for me, but the obvious solutions, on MAKE and with their site, were trivial and didn't help.

Not as easy as we thought June 11, 2012
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Riverside, CA United States
I picked one of these up at the Maker Faire 2012 in San Mateo to let my stepson (a novice solderer) build it and let his kids (5 and 7yo) play with it.

It was fun to build and it's fun to play with but there are a couple of improvements that can be made to improve the design of this product: some notches on the edges of the circuit boards would help to align them while soldering them together. For the whiskers, it would be easier to solder them flat onto the PCB instead of having to bend them at 90 degrees (very difficult!) and then solder them in a hole while aligning them with another hole.

We used the extra IR LED included in the package with a lithium button cell we got at the Faire to make a "secret flashlight" that can only be seen by video cameras and by the robot of course.

Great! February 16, 2010

This kit is great!  I'm only 12 and I made it without any help.  This kit is very easy, fun to build, and well.....awesome!  I was amazed how fun the little thing could actually be!  I defiantly recommend getting it.

Gave as gift to my sister November 16, 2009
Reviewer: Reid Burger from Tempe, AZ United States
I think it shows a lot to hand make a gift for someone.  Even though technically all I did was put it together, it did take me a while to build.  I say around 4 hours of total time to build the mouse.  I did, embarrassingly, put one of the light sensors on backwards and had to try to desolder and reattach.  That added time.  It was only my second project and with a crappy iron and crappy snippers.  In the end, everything worked well except the light sensors.  The one i did right seemed ok but the other was either not working or barely worked, hard to tell.  At the end of the day, it did not follow light.  But it ran around and entertained my sister.
