These 400X microscopes are a huge step up from the "toy" microscopes, and for not much more money. Optically and mechanically, there is simply no comparison. Despite their low prices, these are real microscopes, not toys. They are simple to use, and prepare students for an easy transition to middle school and high school science classes.
In contrast to most inexpensive microscopes, these scopes are built with rugged die-cast metal frames, and metal rather than plastic used for gears and other wearing parts. They incorporate “student-proofing” features to minimize accidental damage, loss of parts, and so on. With minimal care, these microscopes will provide years of reliable service.
Best suited for students aged 5 through 12. They're not optimal for later grades—particularly for students who will go on to major in science in college—but home schoolers on a tight budget can make these scopes serve through at least middle school and possibly high school. These scopes are also suitable for any DIY science enthusiast on a limited budget.

Optical System – both models include color-coded 4x, 10x, and 40xR achromatic glass objectives mounted in a revolving triple nosepiece with positive click stops for easy, precise magnification changes. The included widefield 10x eyepiece with revolving pointer provides 40x, 100x, and 400x magnification. The head rotates 360° and is inclined 45° for ease of use when seated. An inclination joint allows tilting the microscope to achieve the most comfortable viewing position.
Focusing – both models provide rack-and-pinion focusing, with separate coarse- and fine-focusing controls. They also include a slip clutch to protect focusing mechanism from over-turning, a tension adjustment to eliminate focus drift, and a rack stop to prevent damage to objective lenses and slides.
Stage – both models provide an 88mm x 82mm (3-1/2" x 3-1/4") stage with locked-on, spring-activated stage clips and a substage disc diaphragm.
