Sodium metabisulfite, sometimes called sodium pyrosulfite or simply sodium bisulfite, is a common laboratory chemical that is used primarily for generating sulfur dioxide gas, which it produces when mixed with water. Do not confuse sodium metabisulfite, Na2S2O5, with sodium bisulfite, NaHSO3. This chemical is sodium metabisulfite, Na2S2O5. (See also sodium bisulfite) Warning! Harmful if swallowed. Irritant to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Can cause severe allergic reaction if swallowed.
