What is Light Painting?

Light painting (a.k.a light drawing) is a photography technique that involves waving a light source, like a flashlight, while taking a long exposure photograph to create your own “light painting.” Traditionally, what you’d get is a single squiggly line on a black background. With Pixelstick, the game has changed. Instead of being limited to a single light source, Pixelstick is made up of 200 LEDs on a 6 foot stick that projects an image that you upload via an SD card.

Light painting requires three main things: a camera with long exposure, a tripod or flat surface, and a light source - that's Pixelstick!

Key Features

  • 200 high fidelity, color LEDs on 6.1 foot stick w/ handle. Each LED corresponds to 1 pixel in your image. 200px image height max
  • Mounted controller allows for control over brightness, speed, and orientation of the image
  • Stick handle features a rotating sleeve that allows for fluidity and easy movement during shooting
  • Breaks down into two pieces for easy storage and transportation in its carrying case

About the Makers

Pixelstick was created by Duncan McCloud Frazier and Steven McGuigan of Bitbanger Labs, a Brooklyn-based maker group. Pixelstick had humble beginnings - the very first iteration was basically an Arduino board combined with a couple of LED strips.

When Duncan isn’t busy building things for Bitbanger, he’s building things for himself that lump together his love for photography, video, and code. Steven dabbles in all things maker, with a special fondness for the coding, design, and gadgetry.
