Great way to learn January 30, 2010
Reviewer: J.G. from Westampton, NJ United States
I purchased this kit so I could learn to solder.

The kit contains all the electronic components and tools needed to assemble the kit. You only have to supply a 9-volt battery.

The instructions are thorough, and easy to understand. They also provide information resistor colors, information on soldering, and how the circuit operates.

The printed circuit board contains areas to practice a variety of soldering skills. These areas are separate from the actual circuit, so you cannot damage the circuit if you damage the practice area.

After reading through the instuctions, I learned how to solder and I assembled the kit. It worked as soon as it was assembled, a very satisfying experience.

I have assembled and worked on other projects and kits, since learning from this kit. It was a great way to learn a valuable skill.

Does the job. Instructions could be better December 5, 2009
Reviewer: Stefan Jones from Hillsboro, OR United States
The kit has a soldering pen, stand, solder, a bit of desoldering wick*, a snipper, and the components needed to complete the blinky / siren project.

The board is not quite as shown in the photo. It is much more elaborate, with dozens of little copper pads used during the lesson plan.

The instruction booklet has the feel of something put together by an experienced but stodgy shop teacher.  Tells you what you need to know, but not in the most interesting or revealing way.

I got through the instructions and the lesson plan in a couple of hour-long sessions. The blinky siren didn't work right off. I spotted the problem, put a component in the right way, and had a working (but kind of useless) gadget.

But heck, it did the job. I've built about a half-dozen projects since of projects since getting this. (I've screwed up a couple, but bad soldering wasn't the cause!)

* The wick isn't especially effective. When I later had to do some serious desoldering I bought a suction bulb.
