I purchased two of these soldering irons because they are temperature controlled and in my price range. I own an education company and teach electronics and soldering on a regular basis and I wanted to upgrade to soldering irons that had a more sturdy base and were temperature controlled. These work well except that the students tend to rest the iron on the plastic base when they are trying to use the sponge to clean off their iron. Just after two uses, the stand is in pretty rough shape. I prefer to use metal stands so that I can tap the solder off of the tip when I need to. I would not recommend purchasing one of these unless you can be very careful with the iron and not melt the sides.

It's functional, but the stand doesn't fit the base and so it keeps falling off. That's rather unsafe as at any moment your iron could drop to the workbench and roll away.

This iron takes a very long time to heat up. It needs to be on the highest setting to melt common solder, so I'm not sure what the adjustable heat is good for. Also, the light does not indicate when the iron is hot, as noted in the description; the light just indicates the unit is on.

Whether or not you are experienced this with its tip set is a very good deal for a complete soldering station. Why get the tip set? The bigger tips do bigger jobs easily.
