This well documented kit by Gakken includes everything you need to create a walking, wind powered Strandbeest. The kit contains over 80 parts made of light weight plastic and a steel rod. A squirrel cage fan is included for wind power. The kit explains the theory behind the Jansen linkage and includes detailed instructions. Easily modify the kit with an electric fan or a solar powered motor to let it roam on its own. Booklet is in Japanese with highly detailed, step by step, assembly images.

Very satisfying build May 5, 2013

I am surprised there aren't more reviews for this product. I don't typically add my 2 cents but decided to do so since I really enjoyed assembling the kit..

First up, this is a fairly accurate replica of the original kinetic scuplpture. The Japanese instructions are a touch tough to decode but it only adds to the satisfaction of completing the build. Anybody who tries can proceed with the full confidence that the instructions will get you there eventually.

I had to tinker with the connectors to the crankshaft because they were a little sticky, but other than that it was a smooth build.

I am a newbie at these things so it took me 2.5-3 hrs from start to finish. I think this is a pretty cool product and definitely worth the price.
