Description How To

This completely hackable, open-source clock kit has a funky retro feel. It can be programmed to display several different clock "faces" or you can program you own. The kit comes complete with all electronics (soldering required), laser cut case and power plug.

Please note: You'll need some basic soldering and hand tools to assemble the monochron. The good news is that this is a pretty basic kit and even if it's your first soldering project, it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 hours to put together.

Features
  • 128x64 LCD (KS0108)
  • ATmega328 processor (we even stuck an 'arduino' stk500 bootloader on there too)
  • Laser cut enclosure in black acrylic
  • Beeping/blinking alarm with 10 minute snooze
  • Battery backed-up real time clock (DS1307) keeps time even when power is lost
  • European/US 12 or 24 hour time display as well as date
  • Completely open source hardware, all firmware, layout and CAD files
  • Plenty of space for mods, a prototyping area for soldering stuff in
  • Soothing animation of retro arcade style table-tennis for two

Fun project; poor construction November 3, 2012

This is a great project to build a play with. However, it is another great project brought down by a poor acrylic case. The pieces are very easy to break with almost no pressure at all.

Monochron kit: first rate! March 24, 2011
Reviewer: Doug Fort from Arlington, VA United States
I just finished this kit,and I'm really pleased (with the kit and with myself).

The design is good, the materials are good, but to me the best part is the instructions.

If, like me, you have doubts about building something this complicated, take a look at the instruction: http://www.ladyada.net/make/monochron/make.html
