Description How To

Make yourself a remote controlled, crawling "Meka-Centipede" with 32 legs that look like waves when they move all together, with this awesome, no-soldering-required kit. Includes instructions in Japanese, but we've got English instructions right here under the "How To" tab. MAKE is proud to be the exclusive distributor in North America for these brilliant kits, part of Gakken's Mechanical Animals Series.

Features
  • Requires no soldering -- easy to build in about 2 hours
  • See the "How To" tab for English instructions (PDF)
  • The leg movement is realized by a set of link mechanisms that rotates 32 cranks at once, and that keeps their phases different by 45 degrees -- thus the legs move one after another to form "waves"
  • When assembling, enjoy seeing where the kinetic energy is transmitted through the links and where the axis of the crank is located -- the machine will be that much more impressive!

Fun kit December 26, 2008
Reviewer: Lief Morin from Chatsworth, CA United States
I agree with the previous commenter, this kit is well thought out with excellent components.  This kit, however, is not a true robot.  It is a remote control device.  My 13 year old son enjoyed building it as I played part finder.  The instructions in our kit were only in Japanese, although the visual diagrams are exceptional and we were able to put it together with only a few extra parts left over.  Overall good fun!

Awesome quality May 5, 2008
Reviewer: Jeph from Grimsby, ON Canada
The same day that I received the Mechamo Centipede Kit, I eagerly assembled it.  I offer my highest regards to the makers of this kit.  The quality is awesome.  All parts were sorted and organized and accounted for.  The pieces were perfectly machined to fit together.  The smallest parts had enough spares to cover 'droppings'.  And the assembling instructions... I've never seen anything so complete!  My only misgiving on ordering the kit, was potential quality of the instructions... boy was I wrong.  The instuctions were written in perfect english, have detail labelled diagrams, listed important warnings, and was organized to answer questions just when one would come to my mind.  Beyond that it lists the actual materials that comprise the kit, something that I would never get in a western product.  Great care went into creating this product.  I look forward to the other kits!
The final mechanical centipede itself is great fun!
Make:, thanks for importing these kits!
