Karakuri dolls are one of the original forms of robots! The history of Karakuri (meaning "artful mechanism") automatic dolls began in the early Edo period (1603-1867) in Japan. This authentic tea-serving automaton is the most typical type, and is produced according to the Karakuri Zui, the only existing Karakuri mechanical doll manual, written in 1796.
