Description

Herbie the Mousebot is a very quick, easy-to-build, light-chasing robot kit, perfect for beginners. When finished, these little robots are so quick, you have to run to keep up to them; we found that out the hard way when one got loose in the warehouse!

  • Herbie is such an elegant, clever design using very few parts, it's been featured in as a construction project in "Junkbot, Bugbots, and Bots on Wheels", "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Robots" and "MAKE" Magazine.

Enhanced with functional whisker and tail sensors, it doesn't get stuck in corners while it chases around.

Gave as gift to my sister November 16, 2009
Reviewer: Reid Burger from Tempe, AZ United States
I think it shows a lot to hand make a gift for someone.  Even though technically all I did was put it together, it did take me a while to build.  I say around 4 hours of total time to build the mouse.  I did, embarrassingly, put one of the light sensors on backwards and had to try to desolder and reattach.  That added time.  It was only my second project and with a crappy iron and crappy snippers.  In the end, everything worked well except the light sensors.  The one i did right seemed ok but the other was either not working or barely worked, hard to tell.  At the end of the day, it did not follow light.  But it ran around and entertained my sister.

Fun with robo-vermin November 16, 2009
Reviewer: Ryan Pederson from Tucson, AZ United States
My son just turned 10.  I had to show him out to solder and helped him align the sides (not too easy) but by the end he was doing the all the work himself and enjoying the "toughness" of the assembly.  It is fairly simple to assemble but it takes time and attention to detail that many "kid" projects don't provide anymore.  The directions are fun and written for a young adult with jokes for kids and adults.  To make it work we did have to change a few things from the directions.  They tell you to use some double sided foam tape (provided) to attach the motors.  However when we did that we couldn't fit the battery in.  We just removed the tape, reheated the solder to adjust the motor closer to the board and glued it with some "Sumo" glue.  We also discovered that it will not follow any of those new fangled LED flash lights.  They just don't put out enough infrared.  All in all this is a great starter kit but you will need a nice soldering iron.

This kit is great!  I'm only 12 and I made it without any help.  This kit is very easy, fun to build, and well.....awesome!  I was amazed how fun the little thing could actually be!  I defiantly recommend getting it.
