First off, the soldering was easy and fun. The programming was the hard part. I had to go through 17 different web links just to get one download and then the instructions were 17 pages back.

This was the best $18 ive spent. Assembling it was very fun and easy, everything comes with the package (except a serial to usb converter if you dont have one on your computer you need to buy one). Then learning how to program it was something new for me. the steps were very easy and it is very hard to brick the system. I ended up attaching it to my bike and now my bike says something.

This was a really fun project that went together fast. I followed the documenation that was posted on instructibles for assembling the kit, but I used the official documentation for programming the message.
I had tried to make a POV toy a while ago (with a breadboard and a pic chip). It only half worked (probably the fault of my programming abilities). This kit is exactly what I wanted when I was trying to make my own. Every piece that you need is included in the kit (except batteries).
This was my first kit, and I'm now on the lookout for others as this was so satisfying to complete. I wish Make would start offering a bunch more kits like this one (especially in this price range, don't think I'm ready to plunk down over a hundred dollars on a kit MP3 player etc...).
